Multi-grade classrooms and a very low student/teacher ratio afford flexibility in learning for students who are either accelerated or in need of remediation. Staffing has been skillfully planned to include the services of a special needs teacher for two days each week. It is apparent from grouping and staffing decisions that serving the academic needs of all students is a priority at Zion Lutheran.
Zion Lutheran offers an impressive physical plant that includes facilities necessary for a well-rounded curriculum (e.g., a gym for physical education, computer lab in addition to classroom computer stations for student and teacher use, a room dedicated to art/science, a music room and a resource room). Conditions are comfortable and conducive to learning. Rooms are clean, organized, and well-lit. Almost all available wall space is used to display timely instructional materials (i.e., Earth Day posters) and student work. There is strong emphasis on health and safety (i.e., reminder to "Use tissues if you sneeze.") as well as on good character traits (i.e., "Respect everyone's opinions").
Lesson are planned to address the formal, explicit curriculum appropriate to developmental levels of the students in class. Students are on task and engaged in meaningful activities during instructional periods. Instructional strategies include large group activities, small group cooperative learning, guided practice, modeling, individual practice, and recitation.
It is apparent that there is a mutual respect between teachers and students that creates a climate for meaningful learning on many levels. Zion staff and students are commended on their contribution to a productive, safe and friendly school environment.
